1. What are the largest payouts for unused paid time off last year?
A: There are 70 people who got payouts of $10,000 or more for unused sick OR vacation. Some got both.
The person with the largest payout was for over $62,000 — $37,000 sick and $25,000 vacation. Another person got a combined $56,000, another was $47,000.
Employees get between 10 and 25 vacation days every year, and 12 sick days. They can bank up to 50 vacation days to be paid they leave the district. Sick days can be accumulated throughout their employment.
There are 870 people who have 6 months or more of time off accumulated. (1,056 hours). They can’t cash in all those days but that’s what they have saved right now.
The average person has 42 unused PTO days accumulated, which is two months worth of work days off.
This amounts to tens of thousands of dollars for the people with the most saved.
2. How does this compare to past years?
A: Last year the district didn’t provide how much money it paid people for cashing out their unused PTO, it only provided how many hours people had banked.
Last year, there were 615 people who have 6 months or more of time off accumulated — compared to 870 now.
The average person then had 44 work days accumulated, now it’s 42, so very similar.
So, there are a lot more people who have a lot of time saved, while newer employees with little saved keep the average low.
