Open the Books
We shine light
where power
prefers shadow.
Open the Books exists for one reason: to make the unseen visible. We operate the largest private database of public spending in history — billions of records tracing every dollar spent by federal, state, and local governments.

Our Story

Every movement begins with a question that seems almost naïve.

Every movement begins with a question that seems almost naïve. For Adam Andrzejewski and Craig Mijares, that question was: What would happen if every taxpayer could see where every dollar goes?

Adam and Craig began requesting expenditure records from local school districts. When those numbers went online, ordinary citizens could finally trace how their money moved through government. From those kitchen-table beginnings grew a national enterprise that now catalogs trillions in spending from more than 110,000 public agencies.
