The 2014 film Fury starring Brad Pitt showcased the Sherman tank commanders of World War II in the European theatre.
The fight against Hilter's army was waged against long-odds...
They fought the Germans in the hedgerows of France. They were first-in at the Battle of the Bulge. They defended and crossed the Ludendorff Bridge over River Rhine at Remagen, Germany.
This weekend, I learned many details of my grandfather's WWII deployment. Now, I want to learn even more.
My grandfather's commander was Lt. John Howard (Winnetka, Ill). Howard ordered all 'steel pot' helmets on heads, just moments before my grandfather was shot by a sniper. Thankfully, although the helmet dented, it held strong.
Lt. John Howard's timely order made possible the next 79 descendants of my grandfather and grandmother, Sgt. Donald and Marna Norris: 10 children, 23 grandchildren, and 46 great-grandchildren.
Today, on Memorial Day 2016, let's take time to remember with reverence the men and women who sacrificed and died for our freedom and liberty.
May God Bless America.
